Mall Hosts Knitting in Public Day
It's not just a hobby for your grandmother anymore, in fact, it's gaining more and more interest among the younger population and males. Today, people across the globe gathered in various locations to display their work and skill. World Wide Knit in Public Day is held each year on the second Saturday in June. The event started in 2005 when a woman in England felt her knitting was a bit too solitary and wanted to join others in a public place. Four knitting groups from the Minot area gathered today to swap knowledge as well as teach others their craft. And despite what some may think, they say there's a lot of buzz surrounding this hobby. (Ceecy Nucker, Organizer) It's something that people are really getting interested in. There's a variety of different yarns available. There are small projects, large projects, but it's hand-made also. And this is something that's beginning to appeal to younger people. It's not off the rack, not everybody is going to have it, in fact, nobody is going to have what you just finished. In it's first year, the event had only five groups of public knitters, but now that number has grown to around 700.
